Crack In My Paint Job
first, the pic. this is a close up of one of the vents on my cf hood. originally, it was sanded down, then a clear coat was applied to give it the right look. it's too big to actually post here so follow the link:

this is ryan's old hood. i'm not sure where the damage happened, but i noticed it the other day when i was washing the car. you could see some water droplets get underneath, and that ain't good. it means that it can only get worse when water starts doing its business.
my body shop tells me they're best (and very hesitant) recommendation is to ever so carefully take off the clear coat in that area and then brush clear coat back on. i doubt it would turn out perfect, but it would be better than it looks now and will also seal it off and keep it from getting worse.
we're going to decide what to do monday, so any advise before then is very welcome.

true enough. but on this issue, they give the advise hesitantly cuz their work with cf is null. they, as well as i, was hoping someone might be able to give another solution that might work as well.

I can tell you from past experience that your body shop is correct. You'll need to strip down the clearcoat in the affected area. Then through a very tedious process, they will have to 1. spray, 2. let dry, 3. sand, repeat until the height of the clearcoat matches the rest of the hood. On my hood it was a good 1/8th of an inch of clearcoat. Probably about 8 coats of clear until it matched. Remember not to wax the hood for awhile to let the lower layers to dry completely. You'll probably still be able to notice the area, if you look carefully but it's better then the current alternative.
