Costs for replacing retainers with AP2

For some people the job may be simple. Others will take an entire day. Depends on your confidence and skill level.
The job is easily WORTH 500 bucks for parts, labor, and custom valve adjustment. IF it's done to perfection and they dont break anything like the cam towers (cannot be purchased). If they know what they are doing, the can also inspect the valve guides during this job.
For 80 bucks, that is very cheap for a valve adjustment. I would be sure they are setting them to custom specs of .008 and .010, or dont bother. ANY goofball can check a valve and call it "good". A real tech will take the time to make it perfect.
I would hand them the numbers you want. If they say "hey man you got it", it shows their confidence and they are worth it. If they look at you funny and say its not necessary, find another guy.

Good Price. I paid 250 for a valve adjustment and the labor to switch out the retainers. The parts i paid seperately.
On a side note, none were cracked after 148k miles and 10k miles being on boost. Not needed if you have never over-reved.

If you are not mechanically inclined or dont trust yourself to do this, then it is worth it. It can be done relatively quickly, but unless you take it to a very experience S2000 mechanic such as Billman it will be a few hour job. It is tedious work and you need to be careful to be sure nothing falls in the oil galleys. Also, the valve adjustment is a tedious job and I took a few minutes on each valve to ensure they were tight and set to the .08 and .010, but will still take you about an hour or more. I would charge about what SOS is charging to do the install and valve adjustment, but I dont have a name like they do, so Id say its a good deal coming from them.
Also, DONT change to AP2 retainers on the exhaust side, just do it on the intake side.

Since SOS probably works almost exclusively on the NSX and S2K, they are likely more than capable.
$210 is cheap. $210+$80 = $290 is still cheap.
I would think if one has done it many times, they can do it in 3 hours.
I wouldn't trust myself to do retainers yet, but I have done a valve adjustment to my own specs, and that was easy enough.

Billman these guys are doing it: http://www.scienceofspeed.com/
They are local here in AZ, so I trust them to know what to do.
