Default Cooling issue - coolant expanding running hot

So I noticed a bit of coolant on the garage floor after a drive this morning - never happens. Found the leak to be the expansion tank was over filled. I have not touched the coolant level since I changed it last summer and that has never happened so I thought the coolant was getting hotter and expanding more. I took it for a drive and my temps never pass 183 - even when I beat on it but today I got to 196 at idle and back to 185 while driving.. Can anyone provide so thoughts?? Maybe thermostat is checking out???

Should there be pressure when the car is cold? I replaced the cap and drove it for about 45 min. It cooled overnight and today when I opened the cap even though it was cold there was a lot of pressure that escaped and coolant dumped out. Is that normal? I can't say I ever remember that happening. Also noticed when hot or cold the overflow tank level didn't change. With the new cap car ran at 188 which is better but above normal. Is this cap maybe bad also or am I missing something

This morning I noticed I did not have heat so I jacked up the front end and bled the cooling system there was a lot of air I did that a few times got my heat back I took the car for a drive lost my heat and temperature went up to 200° lower hose is cold
Maybe air pocket or thermostat??

Update after cool down I noticed the expansion tank level was low it look like it sucked some in

My car did weird things when the tstat was bad. It would work fine one drive, and the next it would overheat. They're fairly cheap so its worth a shot.

Check the belt driving the water pump for tightness and cracks. Check the play of the water pump pulley. Too much axial play or large water stain from the relief-bleed hole on the water pump housing could mean bad pump bearing or a seal going out. Check the thermostat for full range of motion while heating.

Good luck there!

turns out opening the rear bleed did the trick. new thermo is working great and the car is running really strong at constant 172
