if thermostat is the problem wouldnt he be having problems with engine overheating on a daily basis???

maybe you should check ur heatercore and both hoses (although pressure test verified system was good...) since you smell burning when you turn on the heater.

and leak down test just to make sure u dont have a blown head gasket.
to answer your question no. my overheating would be fine for up to about 4 days then it would do it. i could bleed the system for air and then it was fine again for another couple of days.

not always the case. go to a mechanic and have them do a lithium test.
I had a lithium test done and it passed. So I kept looking for other causes. Replaced the thermostat, radiator cap, radiator, hoses and checked pump.

Turned out it was the head gasket all along.

Like I said back in February, do a UOA. The HG leak will show up if it's there.

Did anyone check your water pump for leaking?

Used oil analysis. I talked to one of my buddies who worked as a mechanic before he asked me what did the shop do when they pressure check it. I told him the shop just put in the pressure tester on the radiator cap and pushed it to the normal pressure. They let it sit for like 5 minute and see if it holds pressure. My buddy told me that is not the correct way to do it. He said you have to put more pressure than the normal level the car usually runs at and after that you HAVE to check all the hoses to see if there is any leaks. The shop I went to did'nt check the hoses when the pressure check it. They just waited to see if the pressure held up.

So I am wondering is my friend's way of pressure checking the correct method? If not what is the correct method of doing the pressure check. Thank you and sorry for the long post.

That tests the cap.

They also need to put it on the radiator and pressurise the system. If it holds pressure all is good. If it doesn't you would look for a leak.

IF there is a small leak in the heater core hose would the radiator pass the pressure test? How much pressure do you need to apply when you do the test? The amount that is listed on the radiator cap? Thanks guys.
