Contemplating Options for Engine Replacement
Folks,
I have a 2007 Kraftwerks supercharged S2K. The factory F22c cracked a piston ring in cyl 3, which gouged the cylinder wall. The options that I have been considering are:
Sleeve my current motor. There is a local reputable shop that can do it for $1200, I would also need aftermarket pistons/rings. Probably <$2500 all in.
A friend has a JDM F20c with very low mileage. He will sell it for $4500, including 2 AP1 transmissions. I can sell the trannys and my hurt F22c to defray some of the cost, so this will also be about $2000. I would need to replace retainers, keepers, and banjos, plus a new supercharger pulley.
Find a new F22c, used. There is one listed at a junkyard about 250 miles away, but they don't have a price or mileage listed because apparently they are still trying to get the keys from the previous owner.
I was leaning towards the JDM motor. I like the ideal of a low-mile, factory-assembled motor and having a higher redline/more compression (might go e85 soon). Unfortunately, the VIN plate from the head has been removed. The motor has a cable TB, so that means it is 99-05, but is it possible to tell what year the motor is without the VIN plate?
I have heard that 99-03 motors have an issue with ring sealing/oil burning, ( https://www.s2ki.com/forums/s2000-un...ption-1185660/ see post #6) Is that true for all AP1 motors before 04? They will burn oil and have poor ring sealing? I was all set for the JDM motor until I saw this.
TIA!

I am located near Pittsburgh, PA. The junkyard one doesn't have a price because they don't know the mileage. Not sure about warranty, but if it has one, I expect it to be ~30 days.

I don't think JDM engines have VIN plates attached.
I also don't know if Japan got the banjo bolt update...which would narrow down what year the F20 is.
Its likely equivalent to the USDM 00-01 spec, just judging from what I've seen (from the JDM S2000 stuff I've bought).
Converting to 06 spec will require some parts from your 06 spec head. And your 06 spec valve cover. Research what it takes to make a 00-05 car ready for flash pro. The steps to convert an 00-05 over to an 06+ are similar to that.
I think since you're going to stay FI, maybe having the engine sleeved is better.
OR...consider a K swap.

For the price of a used F20/F22 these days....K swap.

Look at the serial number stamping on the block to find out the year. It sits at the front right corner on top of the block facing up, right near/under the #1 intake manifold runner.
It is true that the 99-03 motors CAN have issues with oil burning. It's not a given though, it's more of a hit or miss kinda thing. Some are perfectly fine, others burn oil like there's no tomorrow.

I am still undecided. Between the JDM motor, the F22c, and sleeving, the total cost is going to end up being ~$2000. The F22c would be the easiest, but I would also be ending up with a 130k motor with unknown issues/maintenance. I am leaning towards the JDM motor (I was able to confirm that it has <20k miles on it), but that would also be a decent bit of work more than the F22. Sleeving would certainly be nice, and I could potentially add displacement with a larger bore/add compression if I wanted to, but I think it would end up being the most expensive option.

A facelift UK F20C wouldn't have the oil burning issue, the retainer issue, or the oil squirter issue.
