Default Compression test question

I go down this friday to check out/pick up the replacement engine I found. It's several hours away.
I'm pretty confident that it's going to be OK, but I want to be sure before I drop that much cash.

I'll be doing an out-of-car compression test and have done some reading up on it since I'd never done it before.

There are a couple of questions I have, to make sure I get it done right.

1) Oil - the engine has been sitting dry for a couple of years. Would doing a compression test as-is be OK or would it risk damage? Should I top it off with oil and manually turn it a bit to get oil through the system before I do any cranking?

2) Wet vs dry testing - With it sitting so long and being cold, I expect it to read lower than normal compression. I'm going to be looking for constancy rather than high numbers. That being said, am I better off leaving it dry or should I do a wet test by adding oil to the cylinders before I do the compression test?

Thanks guys!

Why cause the very damage you are trying to test for? Oil the cylinders.

This will tend to cover up any worn ring issues, but what real choice do you have?
