Default Compression Test - Coolant Line

Womp womp...

Ive been smelling coolant at idle for the past day or so and finally had time to go check it out... I found the problem for the coolant in the engine bay.

My buddy also said when I got on it that he saw some black smoke and then when it hit vtec it smoked even more so.... (I have a test pipe so SOME smoke and common so I hear)

So I compression test it just now and cylinder 1 & 2 have 220, 3 has 200 and 4 has 150.

I don't think the coolant line bursting has anything to do with the compression numbers..maybe it does, I don't know.

I was hoping it'd be a head gasket but if it was a head gasket wouldn't the compression be low across the board?

Really sucks I bought this S2K to restore cosmetically.. I hope the motor isn't toast.

Thanks in advance,

Got this from another thread... left one is bad, right one is good.

Unless I'm really tired....mine seem to all look like the right one?

70 psi is a big difference, I think the manual says max difference between cylinders should be 20psi (someone correct me if I'm wrong). Have you checked the valve lash?

Compression would not be low across the board, that would be all the cylinder rings.
When you did the compression test you cranked until it maxed out right?

Headgaskets are very peculiar sometimes, they can blow and let oil into the coolant, oil into the cylinder or coolant into the oil and coolant into the cylinder. Find yourself a leakdown tester and go from there, assuming the valve lash isn't fubared. ShocK

Just now when I was tearing it down... but not with the feeler gauge yet.

They seemed somewhat loose to me but that was just by feel.

I wanted to check to make sure I had no cracked retainers.... which seems like I might be okay.

When I compression tested I didn't crank it for a long time.. everywhere I read said to crank it for about 5-6 seconds.

It netted me 220 in the other cylinders so I assumed that was the correct way?

I edited my post quite a bit, but I would start with the lash and then compression test again, then if its still low I'd do the leak down. Leak down will tell you a lot if you have to go that far.

black smoke is normal = rich fuel mix, white smoke is coolant. If you are getting white smoke when the car is fully warmed then coolant burning is the culprit, head gasket is a likely source for white smoke, dunno if a ruptured coolant line is related or just a coincidence. Leak down test is the best way to go as it gives you info on the exact source in the hands of a professional.

Makes sense... I'm gona put it back together..adjust the valves..compression test and go from there.

Thanks for the replies guys.

I'll keep you posted.
