Just remember, starting the car in gear may also cause problems. Especially, for the car parked in front of you.

I have been told that holding down the clutch while starting can cause problems.
You've been "told" wrong. Other than broken pads in the clutch interlock switch will prevent power getting to the starter solenoid.

I'm guessing the buzzing is the starter solenoid is stuck or starter cut relay is chattering.

More than likely it's your starter.

I had my clutch switch bypassed for years and I certainly made the mistake of starting the car in gear more than a few times. The car will never start as it will stall every time. I would say the most I have ever jumped forward was never more than 12 inches.

He is referring to the problems that can be caused to the engine, to the thrust bearing washer. Starting the engine with clutch depressed, especially on a cold engine, can stress the thrust bearing.

The thrust bearing washer is designed to withstand this. More useless worry,

Looking more and more like the starter or solenoid. The Starter Cut Relay seems to be clicking when I press the Start button. None of the fuses are blown. Looks like it is time to find out how to change them. Just as well change them both while you are doing it.
