Cold Air Intake Question

Cold Air Intake Question
Do I need a KNN, AEM or other name brande cold air intake? What if I bought a lesser brand and popped a KNN filter on the end, will that be suitable for increased engine performance?
I'm just curious as the guys at Advance Auto Parts told me to find the least expensive model I can find where the air filter mounts low to the ground...

Surely somebody has some input on this question... I would to get a CAI but I don't want to waste money if it isn't required... I'm not being cheap, just really want verification that the AAP guy has correct knowledge...

You can find cheap ones like this, that should be good:

You might need to buy better fittings and filter, but the pipe is already bent for you.

One thing you may want to consider is the design of the pipe.
The AEM V2 has the filter angled upwards and lower level bend in the pipe behind this. From what I have read on these forums this results in water that drips on the filter, collecting in the bend of the pipe. I believe the AEM V2 has a small plug here that allows drainage, but surely it would be better if nothing collected here in the first place. It sounds like to be safe you would have to drain the pipe before you started the car every time it rains, or gets wet from washing.
There are also claims by various manufacturers that the pipe length/shape has been specifically designed for greater performance (assuming to do with wavelengths?)
I guess the only other thing I can think of would be the installation instructions and brackets etc that some brands may do better than others?

Thanks guys... It seemed to make sense but I wasn't really sure if certain materials would heat up less thus mimizing the chance of heating the air entering into the pipe...

there might be different gauge piping, but how not sure how much of an influence that would be.
Xviper made a shield for his AEM and blocked the drainage hole. That should help with most of the hydrolock issues people have been experiencing.
