Default codes P1172 & P2A00 (what sensor to buy and where)

hi everyone. i searched old posts on here for this issue and found some stuff, but not specific as to which sensor to buy.
i brought my car into the shop and they quoted me $400 for parts and $100 for labor. a little high for me (as i was told)

how do i know which sensor to buy? for a base 08 s2000. i am surprised this Check engine light came on for my car. it only has 40k miles.

i see downstream sensors, upstream, secondary, primary. this is all very confusing to me.

Can someone on here help me narrow it down to the part and where to buy online at the lowest price?

thanks!

Those codes are for the upstream o2 sensor. The sensor BEFORE THE CATALYTIC. Its the sensor on your header. Had the same 2 codes for my honda fit last month. I replaced the primary o2 and it solved the probelm. Good luck

Here's where you can buy it. Denso is best for our cars. Look around, you may find a cheaper place to buy this. Just look up the part number if you do

http://www.amazon.com/Denso-234-9065.../dp/B001CHFDRU

I'm sure you can install it yourself. All you need to do is lift the car and have a 22mm wrench to remove the front o2. Unclip the o2 and install the new sensor

thanks for the reply chubbys2k!

Do you think this one will work just as good? it is only $46 bucks.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/141796241865...%3AMEBIDX%3AIT

EDIT: NEvermind, I listened to you and got the Denso brand part# on ebay. $103 shipped.

my question is now about installation. is that part under the hood on driver side or passenger side?
or in the back by driver side or passenger?

thank you!

Replacing the front A/F ratio sensor fixed the P1172 problem on my 2007. Bit of a hassle, as space under car is a bit tight. An electrical connector removal tool may have helped. As the connection is nearly on top of the trans.

Good luck!

It's under the car. You will need to proper lift the car SAFELY. You can search how to lift the s200 on here somewhere I'm sure. Look for the exhaust manifold (header) under the car. The o2 sensor will be right there. Use your size 22mm wrench and take out the sensor. You will probably need to muscle it out. BE CAREFUL NOT TO STRIP THE SENSOR. There is a specific socket out there for this o2 that you can buy to make it less likely to strip the o2 sensor. Then follow the wiring and Unclip it. It should be ontop of your transmission. Ill try to find a good diy for you on here. Most importantly, lift of the car carefully because it sounds like your not too experienced, but the job is pretty simple.

Ditto. I cut the old sensor wires, so I could fit the boxed end of wrench over the hex. Deep 22mm socket would be nice, too.

Upstream = Primary = Bank 1 Sensor 1 = Sensor before the cat/on the header

Downstream = Secondary = Bank 1 Sensor 2 = Sensor on the cat

Those are all names and descriptions that mean the same O2 sensor.
