Theres only one way the clutch can go in. The TO bearing wont fit infront of the PP without something holding it in place.
Take out the protective boot that covers your slave and fork, have someone sit in the car and push on the clutch and see if the slave is actually pushing the release fork enough, or at all.

I had the same symptoms. To get it home I turned the engine off, put it in 1st and started the car. The starter actually moved the car forward. I used clutch-less shifts the rest of the way home.
