Clutch replacement.. DIY? aftermarket winners?
#141
I'm doing a clutch change and ran into a little problem. I'm having trouble taking the trans apart from the motor. The trans is about a inch apart from the motor but will not come off. To all that has done a clutch job, am I missing something. The release fork is still attach, it is stuck. Can the trans come apart with the release fork still in the trans? Please advise asap. Thanks.

Common guys, dont be scared. Ive probably pulled 20 different transmissions in the last couple years and do you honestly think that Honda dealerships have some kind of magical shop workers?
Its not that hard, you just have to get your hands dirty and have someone around who is competent with a wrench or who has done it before. Learn how to manipulate tools and get into tight places. Swivels, extensions, and adapters are all your friends so learn how to use them and go to town.
Hell, the first time I worked on an S2K, I was pulling the entire motor and we did it in just a few hours without a lift.

Swimshady,
Honda started with a starter bolt, and designed a car around it. Unless you've pulled 20 different S2000 transmissions, don't be an ass. It took me about an hour to get my socket on that bolt (using the force). There is a big difference from being frustrated and being "scared".
BTW, I suspect that pulling the whole engine might not be much more difficult than pulling the tranny. By your wording, it also sounds like you had help...

Thanks for the write up - very helpful!
Just finished replacing clutch kit on my 2000 S2000. It lasted just about 70K with much stop and go traffic - been my daily driver for 7.5 years now. Pretty much stock, except for AEM intake.
New install seems fine - went with Honda Dealer parts.
BUT the new clutch seems to have less 'bite'. I haven't really gotten on it yet, but enough to feel the rear tires break free just a little... the clutch held; it just shifts without any 'bang' from 1-2.
Did Honda soften up the springs in the pressure plate?

need some help
i got all the bolts out that connect the tranny to the motor.......but it will not slide back.
I need some input on how to seperate the two.
I tried prying with a pry bar.....it seems to be stuck up top, and before you ask yes i got to all the upper bolts.
Is it resting on pegs? Do i just need to lift up to take the pressure off for it to slide back. I didn't have a helper today so there was only so much my 140lb self could do as far as moving stuff around on the jack.
oh and the release fork is pulled out, so that's not it
