ok..... those BOTH do NOT look like they have overheat marks on them, but then again i cant really tell from those pictures. how did they get so rusty? they should both be shiny and clean if they just came out of your car! (and even if not, there shouldnt be that much water in your clutch area) the only reason to resurface/replace either of those components anyways is if they are warped from the alleged overheating.
if there is no warp, then they do not need to be replaced, imo. however i dont know weather or not they have a way to check for warping.

in fact, it looks like they washed it off (thus the rust) and then smudged it with their fingers....................
hope i helped a bit,
sage

btw i have had several clutches out before, and am not just some random guy
i work at a bmw/mercedes shop and am ASE brake/suspension certified.

It's difficult to say with you're pics. I can't say that I've seen a hot-spotted clutch that looks the same. I believe the flash is distorting how it actually looks.

If I was the Tech replacing the engine, I'd want to replace the clutch at the same time, just to prevent a possible comeback.

They can both be scuffed up.
unless you can feel distortions. If you can feel the highs and lows with you fingers, take the dealers advice.

It's late, but what did the dealer say? What's he going to do?

Rivet head depth: standard .047" new .067"

Clutch disk thickness: standard .32" new .35"

You can measure the clutch disk with a dial caliper.
