Default Clutch Issue?

When I took my car to my mechanic to have the 45k checkup done a few weeks ago, I asked him to look at my clutch because I have noticed that when I depress it does not do so smoothly. This is an intermittent problem--sometimes the clutch feels fine, but after I drive it awhile, it sort of gets a 'notchy feeling' in the pedal almost like the pedal is catching at certain places when I depress it.

Anyways, they looked at it and even test drove it but they said they didnt notice what I was telling them. One of my friends drove my car and they said that they did notice something, but it is sort of subtle.

My mechanic made a note for me to bring it in if it gets worse, cause he said it could be the master cylinder--supposedly manual honda master cylinders in 00 were known to go bad.

I definately notice it, but I'm not too sure what to do--I really trust my mechanic--moreso than any honda dealer in my area.

Any suggestions? If you think it might be the master cylinder, are those expensive? Thanks for any help

The easiest thing to do bleed the clutch hydraulic system. The fluid gets contaminated pretty quicky and can cause the notchy pedal feel. You can still have other problems with the system, including insufficient or contaminated grease in the release fork, throwout bearing and sleeve.

I'm not a believer in the 00 master cylinders are know to be bad arguement. My guess is the fluid is original and has never been flushed or changed since 00.

I called the honda dealership that did the maintenence on my car prior to my ownership, and they said their records showed that the owner had all of the regularly scheduled maintence services had been performed. But I guess that doesnt necessairly mean they did it. I dont know if I buy the master cylinder going bad either. I have to take it in to get my new headlight put in next week, so I'll ask them to change my clutch fluid. I'll try that first--if anyone has any other suggestions, let me know. Thanks for the info thus far.

Bleeding the clutch hydraulics isnt in the service manual to be changed at a milage interval. That's why most haven't been done.

I flushed the brake fluid completely and within a 100 miles of driving the car the fluid started to turn black again so replacing it would be a good IDEA.

I had my boss look at my car today--he used to be a mechanic for 15 years fixing up british cars and he took a look at things. He showed me where the clutch fluid was, and he said it looked like coffee grounds. He said he was sure that the fluid needed to be changed. So he and I are going to do it in the next couple of days.

IF what slows2k said doesn't work (he's been spot on so it probably will), the throwout fork can be partially removed from the trans and you can grease the pivot pin. Just take the two bolts out of the slave cyl, swing it aside, click the fork out and grease it.
