BRILLIANT IDEA:
I just had a talk with a freind of mine.
At this point, wiht only .5'' left, i can ENGAGE the release fork to the TO bearing (it reaches). I plan to reattch the slave cylinder and have someone sit in the car an push down the clutch to release the clamp load on the friction disk. then i will be on the bottom and try to give the trans a little bump and jiggle to get it to mate.
Anyone think this is a BAD idea? If so, why? Any potential risks?

It should work. Just make sure you have a few bolts started to prevent the transmission from slipping back. That was actually going to be the next thing I was going to try if the 'eyeball alignment' hadn't worked for me.

I do remember that thread! the fork DOES engage, so hopefully this does the trick. I had a problem (more like a really really hard time) getting the imput shaft back into flywheel assembly, so im really hesitant to pull it back out to 'eyeball.' hindsight is 20/20... i shoulda eyeballed first, rather than put so much faith in the alignment too.

thanks everyone who chimed in. i followed hecash's idea and just friggin torqued it in. just got back from a test drive and everything seems ok.
I did get a CEL though. code 6-0 AIR PUMP. I didnt even come CLOSE to the pump working on this thing... anyone get CEL's when this came up? any wireing harness plugs i might have missed? DOes the airpump circuit share any connections?

Check the Vacuum line routing around the airbox and throttle body. Chances are you've got the lines reversed or disconnected.
