Clutch gone.

Clutch gone.
I took off in a bit of a hurry today then slowed and took the car out of gear. When I went to select another gear, it wouldn't go into it. Turns out the clutch will not disengage.
What sort of things go wrong that can result in the clutch not disengaging?
I guess low fluid could do it but it happened after I abused the clutch so I doubt that is it. Can the slave cylinder piston come out? Or the fork?
Any help would be appreciated.

funny i think i have this same problem. i was doing a flew pulls and first thing i noticed is my car shifted into gear like crap. does your car not want to go in to first gear and revers the most and does it make eny funny noise or is it just harder to shift than before

If you find the level is low you kinda havo go through the whole routine.
Check master behind carpet for leaks.
Check slave for leaks.
Replace both if needed but fresh fluid may cure the leaks.
Flush & bleed system (with slave off trans)
Grease push rod (polish first if needed)
Grease fork pivot points in trans and at throwout.
Put it all back together.
Check mechanical play at pedal, reduce if needed.
Check there is still hydraulical play.
Test drive

Spitfire - forgive me but that advice just sounds like you are polishing your rod.
I've had some sort of failure due to undue force. Greasing my fork pivot ain't gunna do diddly.

Its part of the routine.
You know.. a routine you go through finding / solving a problem.
Sitting in your car looking at the clutch pedal ain't gonna do diddly either.
Now.. if you would have posted: "I've checked the level and it is where I left it" (Note that I'm not saying that low level is ok because its not, it indicates there is a leak) I guess its time to remove the slave (for starters) and have a look through that hole in the trans.
If you find the fork is broken (unlikely) or any other mecahnical issue (can't really think of anything, wel.. maybe the throwout) .. you found the problem.
If it all looks allright.. the clutch disk itself may be a problem.
You can't see the disk through the hole in the trans.
Unfortunately.
You "must" have seen the pics on here of broken clutch disks, where the part that holds the spline (with the springs that cause clutch buzz) is broken off.
If that happened to you you have to drop the trans.
But I would rather just start by looking at the fluid level.

Now if he's true to form he'll fluff the start, cause an accident and DNF.
I'm pretty familiar with clutches. I've changed this one twice and done plenty in the past.
And I'll go through the routine on my way to diagnosis and repair. What I was really hoping for was a heads up from someone who'd been in this situation.
Ideally:
"Hey, that exact same thing happened to me! The xxxxxx comes loose from the yyyyy. Easy fix!"
Now if he's true to form he'll fluff the start, cause an accident and DNF.

I jacked up the car yesterday and pulled off the slave cylinder. I moved the fork with a crowbar and there is plenty of resistance.
I'm afraid to admit it may just be a case of a blown master cylinder going wrong at the exact time I decide to do a launch. I had a look in the foot well and there is some build up on the back of the MC but no dripping.
Oh and then I sat down just in time for the start of the race. Good result, but could have been better. Could have been a lot worse though.
