Its the starter sticking for a few seconds. when my car was at honda for servicing they had to start it first thing in the morning and it had that quick grinding sound as usual, the tech without hesitation said "your starters sticking". he then proceded to mention its fairly common (as we can see from response from this thread) and said its not really anything to worry about. its just the starter staying engaged a second too long.

Instead of creating a new thread I'll post here.
My MY 2002 just starting experiencing a sound on cold startups when the temp is below 35 degrees and the car has been sitting at least over night.
The sound I would describe as a "Screech" and happens the moment the engine fires and lasts only 1/2 a second. I'll try to get someone else to start the car for me next time I start it cold so I can listen for it under the hood to try to pinpoint its location. Really sounds more like a tensioner than a starter sticking to me. I had a failing hydraulic tensioner on my 2001 Honda Prelude and it would make a similar sound on startups.
Seems to me that a sticking starter would make more of a grinding sound, not a screech.

i find that if you let off the start button just before the car is actually started, it fires up without the grind. it's hard to get used to but seems to be working for me so far. just remember, this is only when the car is cold

If that's working for you it's proof that your sound is caused by a sticking starter. I will experiment with that and see if it makes a difference.
