Clunking sound when coming to a stop in first
When decelerating with the clutch pedal pushed in still in first gear there is a shake and clunking noise. I have also noticed a difficulty in downshifting even at lower rpm. I just changed the diff fluid and tranny fluid. Mobil 1 75 90 diff and GM synchromesh in the tranny. I don't know if it is the transmission or the diff or what. Can anybody shed a little light. Thanks alot. James.

I had a mechanic friend drive the car and he thinks that the clutch is not disengaging. It does it in any gear when coming to a stop. Anybody ever have this happen?

It is not hard to pull out of gear into neutral. It only makes the sound when I am almost at a stop. Sometimes it is hard to put into gear and downshifting is a pain. Accelerating and upshifting is normal most of the time. It doesn't clunk if the car is in Neutral when coming to a stop. I don't think it is the tranny or diff anymore just from what I read about them when they go out.

hopefully you don't downshift from 2nd to 1st. i know there are some people that do that, to me it seems it puts too much stress on the tranny. lowest gear i'll downshift is to 2nd and every downshift i d/c and rev match the car.

When did you last replace your clutch fluid, it could be air in those lines. I'd bleed the clutch and go from there.

78000 miles.
If you don't rev match, or if you do and not properley I am willing to guess the spring retainer on your friction disk is broken.
