When you start your car, are you in gear or in neutral? It is common to get a "clunk" feel/sound when you put it in gear after starting a cold engine.
What causes this???

I think Slalom44 was talking about a totally different thing. At cold start, fast idle can be as high as 2000rpm. When you depress the clutch and try to put into 1st gear to get going, the shafts in the tranny may not be spun down enough in such a way that when the synchros try to couple the speed between stopped 1st gear and the spinning shaft, the reaction force automatically try to drive the rear wheels. The clunk is from this force taking up the driveline slack downstream. In fact, it doesn't have to happen when cold. Next time stopped at the light in neutral clutch out, try depress the clutch and "quickly" hold the shift lever against 1st gear entrance (don't force it), chances are you'll hear the same clunk. Happens to all FR cars I've driven.

My opinion on this post is maybe what happen to me this morning. When i pressed the start button the car started but the starter made a grind sound even after i let go of the button like I held on the button to long. I didn't drive it at all yesterday. Don't know if it was cold last night. I'm not worrying about it.

Did it help you?
It helps in a way that it's less likely to hesitate on startup, but there's still a one-shot shake. For those who got use to the PPF (power plant frame in the miata) or torque tube or whatever they call it in the Corvette, you don't realize how effective this device is until you don't have it any more.

This is something totally different. Your symptom is the starter pinion gear doesn't disengage from the flywheel ring gear for whatever reason. Could be the solenoid contacts in the starter got loose or the pinion shaft got sticky. If this gets worse, consider replacing the starter.

I have a 2006 S2K,
it make the same sound only when first started in the mornings or when vehicle has been sitting around until cold. The clunk sounds almost like drive line slop or, the drive shaft or trans is getting one quick jerk. But, when warm, like after driving 10 minutes and restarting the clunk is gone.
