clunk/popping noise from steering
#51
I have the same issue. Torqued down all subframe, control arm, sway bar, and coilover bolts today except ones at the alignment adjusters. Did not do the steering rack bolts cause there is a lot of stuff in the way and I ran out of time. Noise is still there. Next thing to try is the steering rack bolts and then get an alignment and hopefully one of those are loose.

May have a busted compliance bushing.

Welp, it wasn't the steering rack bolts.
Thanks for the suggestion! I had to look up which bushings those are, but sure enough they're cracked. Not super bad, but definitely could use new ones. It made the pop noise when I lifted it to check.
Two questions:
1: Do you think that cracking is bad enough to be the popping noise?
2: If so, what would be the negative consequences of taking it on one more spirited weekend in the mountains before replacing them over the winter?

While not life threatening, it does make the steering less precise, more wandering, plus the clunk of the metal sleeve banging around.
If the bolt is seized you will have to cut it out with a reciprocating saw. The camber bolt can be pushed out with an air hammer.

Any luck with this?

This issue has been solved! Thanks to Artin for riding along and figuring it out immediately. Several of the alignment adjuster nuts were not tight.
Last time I had an alignment was probably 3-4 years ago. I drive the car quite spiritedly in the mountains several times a year. It seems they had just worked themselves loose over time and things were just shifting around. They're tight now, but it will need an alignment to make sure it's right again. And more often to keep it that way.
