Clunk Noise Driver Rear
#21
Thanks Slowcrash.
It seems that when I lifted the suspension without the shock there was no noise....but I didn't know if that mean it was 100% the shock or if it was just from being un-tensioned.
I will double check the isolator bushings tomorrow but they seemed decent earlier. I'm looking locally for an oem shock I can 'rent' and swap just to drive the car around the block.

F#@&'ing A, this is the gift that keeps on giving.
Removed both shocks, and so both sets of control arms are there floating. I found a reliable way of replicating the noise (so shocks are not part of it, surprisingly). Removed the sway bar end links and I couldn't reproduce the noise. Installed autozone end links and the noise still occurs. Sway bar bushings on order although the noise doesn't sound like that, but who knows.
The way I can replicate the noise with both shocks off:
-Take my pry bar and flex the entire assembly downwards until I hear a pop.
-Let the suspension return to normal.
-Sharply jolt hub up and down with my hands....the noise happens in both directions.
-After a while the noise will go away....to get it back I have to flex the assembly down again.

Ok, so I've got a reliable way to reproduce the noise....however I can't for the life of me pinpoint where it's coming from.

It almost sounds like it's above the diff but that doesn't make much sense. I put a pry bar to all the bushings and didn't notice anything out of place.

I get a "ping" kind of noise from the rear when I start moving in the day - I think it is just how the car sits and something is settling as I get it moving.
Have you ckecked the suspension bolts with lynch pins that none are loose - it sounds like something is allowing just a bit of play. Have you ever swapped your inner CV cups?
