if you're pad is sliding around within your caliper, i suspect that a "ticking" sound is the least of your worries.....

Indeed, but the rear calipers actually have a very "open" design, if you will. Plus, they're designed to accept a wide range of pad shapes, to accommodate the slight variances among aftermarket OE-replacement pads. The better pads will have lock tabs on the pad backing plate, which you can close (with some channel locks or the garage floor) against the caliper body, to help prevent sliding/vibrations.

Either way, it's generally only a single click and nothing too major.

If you think about brake rotors (without integral hubs), sometimes the holes to accept the wheel studs will be much larger than required. When trial mounted, there will be quite a bit of radial freeplay/slop in the brake rotor, but that all goes away once you put the wheel on and torque it to spec. It's really nothing to worry about.

You'd be surprised how many people do not install them, whether it be negligence, ignorance, or incompetence. I know I've done it before.

i'll take your word for it, but it seems second nature to want put some sort of "locking" mechanism on them.....

Well, the times I forgot to install them (which I did go back and do it the right way, mind you), it was because I was in a hurry, and didn't see the locking mechanisms and/or anti-vibration plates at the bottom of the box. Almost like when I change my oil, and almost forget to change the oil filter.



As far as wanting to "put some sort of locking mechanism" on the pads, you gotta think: Not everyone is as mechanically inclined as us car guys; they have no reason, no need to know anything about it. That's what the mechanics are for. Tell me you would not be stunned speechless if some stranger told you that cars don't need oil changes but every 30k miles, or that he didn't know hot to put on a spare tire. They're simply not car guys, and this kind of stuff doesn't interest them.

From the other side, they could turn it around just as easily by asking if you know what gives humans a sense of balance, or something to that extent.
