Hey everyone,

I am looking for a little help as I am getting an odd noise from my car. When I slow down from say 40-0 in my car I get a clicking noise that goes from fast to slow as speed decreases. It seems it is directly correlated to the speed of the car. It will only make the sound if I am in neutral and coasting to a stop.

I first thought it was coming from my front wheels so I jacked up the car and spun the front wheels and nothing. I jacked up the back and spun the rear wheels and I was getting the sound. I got under the car and it seemed like it was coming from the tail of the transmission.

Anyone have any input on this? Thanks for your time in advance as the dealer in town has only seen one other s2000 and the tranny shop isnt sure what it is.

I know that the rear axle splines dry out and need to be re-greased. Once they became dry they would make a clicking sound.

it will not make the sound when the car is in gear but it will when in neutral slowing down. Im leading more towards something in the tranny.

no you need your axle nuts re tourqued.

I retorqued my axles and it did not help. Yes I followed the instructions on the TSB. I got under the car and had my friend turn the rear wheel while on jack stands to recreate the clicking and it seems to be coming from the top of the transmission close to where the tailshaft starts. Any input?

Sounds like what I was hearing before my diff blew. Very feint dull clicking that I could only hear coasting at low speed.

Did you check my post on 'creaking and snapping' I posted yesterday? Your symptoms sound like mine, but mine seems to be a wheel bearing about to go out. Did you check for play in the rear wheels? I had clicking, now grunting and some squealing.

sorry I dont have the TSB number, i have just read all the threads on s2ki about the procedure and gone from there. There is no play in the back tires at all, I did check that. Since I have been worried that it is my transmission lately I have been hearing the whining noise similar to a wheel bearing coming from the tunnel. As speed increases the droning humm increases as well. Also, the clicking noise is very apparent when I put my ear to the shifter while coasting.

just to give people an update if they run into the same problem and find htis thread searching. I took off the tailshaft of the transmission and I could recreate the sound by just spinning the end part taht usually connects to the propeller shaft (number 7 in diagram). I had all the bearings in the tailshaft replaced at a local tranny shop with all honda oem parts.

After replacing all the bearings, I took the tailshaft if i pulled #7 outward and spun the assembly, there would be no clicking, if i pushed in #7 and spun it, tehre would be the clicking again. I assumed it would be the race for the last bearing that is in the transmission and not in the tailshaft since this would set the clearance for the whole tailshaft (number 14 in the diagram).


I bolted it up, and there was still clicking. I took out the race and saw there was shims behind it. I figured this is the problem but just ended up bolting everything together with the original shims and left it clicking. I did replace the race for bearing #14 and just used the existing shim. Would this be the problem, do I need a different shim?

If anyone wants to confirm what im thinking I would be happy to hear your opinions.
