Clicking noise at transmission engagement...
Hey-
I just noticed that over the past week or so my car is making a weird "click" or "knock" noise. The noise occurs only as I finish letting the clutch out and the transmission engages from a stop, or from reverse to a forward gear (somethimes it is 2 "clicks"). The noise seems to be coming from either right under me, or near the rear axle. I have a 2000 S2k with 46,000 miles. It is a certified car, so any problem to the transmission / rear diff. should be covered under warranty. I was wondering if this is common (a querk of the car/transmission) or is it something worth bothering the dealer about. I have heard stories about the rear diff. going out, and was thinking this might be a sign.
thanks in advance for all advice.
John
ps-I am looking to conserve gas in the city, is it bad to run in the taller gears at lower speeds (i.e.- 5th-6th from 35-45mph?)

it's not necessarily bad to use higher gears at lower speeds, but i wouldn't let the rpm go much below 2500. you dont want that kind of "lugging" or load on the engine.
as for your noise, I'd jack up your back tires with the parking brake off and car in neutral, and then try spinning them by hand. see if you can hear the clicking.
you can always take it in to the dealership too since it's under your warranty.

If the car is in neutral, the "click" is not present. It only "clicks" or "knocks" once, and that is when the clutch is already 3/4 out and the transmission is engaging. It does not happen at speed or in the higher gears. I am wondering if I am just hearing something at lower speeds that I would not recognize at higher speeds due to wind / engine noise. I also noticed that it does not really "click" if I launch at a higher RPM (3.5K-above).
it is not a constant clicking, just a single click upon engagement of the transmission.
