Were you checking it? There have been many cases of improper checking. Not lack of checking.

Price depends on how mechanically proficient you or your buddies are
Actually I'm curious to know what you mean by improper checking Billman?
BOTH sides of the stick must be read. If it shows perfect on one side, and nothing on the other, you have nothing.

This issue is specific to the s2k and has cost many people an engine, thinking their oil level was ok.

I actually do check both sides to make sure it both reads full, I remember someone mentioning this was shown in the car manual but I have yet to see it written in it.

Why is it one side reads full, or always higher then the other side? I just put in a very small amount of oil to cap off the full level on mines since one side was reading full but the other side was slightly low. Actually as far as the checking of oil goes, is it best to check it cold or to warm it up fully turn of the car and check it after about 10 minutes of sitting since oil expands when its hot.

cold is the best wat to check. less chance of the stick picking up oll off the windage tray or side of block (thats why you get false readings)

I just learned this the hard way/expensive way as Billman said earlier . Had been only checking one side and I wasn't reading much on the other side, but I would glance at it and never caught on to them being different levels.

I just got my S2000 back after getting a new used engine and 1.5 months.

Happened just like yours, but here was my damage: spun rod bearings, fried piston rings (this might have been an earlier problem, can't remember if mechanic said this was the reason or an effect), scored cylinder wall, and so I just decided to pick up a used engine for 3500 with 35k miles on it and tranny attached.

Sorry man, really hate to hear ya make the same mistake as me. But it just makes it even more that I'm not letting this car go now that I'm so invested in it! lol.
