Clanking Sound/Shifter

Clanking Sound/Shifter
I've been to the dealer 11 times now to try to resolve a loud CLANK or CRUNCH or CLACK (most accurate description) sound between 1st and 2nd gear. You can hear it echo off the buildings when you drive down the street. It makes me wince every time it happens. I cannot reproduce this sound at will. As an intermittent problem, the dealer can't replicate it, and won't try to fix it. Anybody out there got any ideas on the problem, and especially a fix? Thanks, Kev.

do you FEEL anything or is it just a sound? You are familar with what grinding is right? Not sure if you are getting grinds with the 2nd gear synchro but that would be the first guess. When it happens are you shifting fast/hard/ near redline? Or is it happening just absolutely random? At redline, the pre-04's have a long way from 1st to 2nd (around 3k rpms) so that is where some of the problems with our 2nd gear lies.

Go out and try this on a consistent basis:
-make sure you push the clutch all the way to the floor before shifting.
-make sure you hold the shifter against the left side stopper all the way down into 2nd gear.
-try not to "ram" the stick into 2nd in one rapid motion. When you just about get into 2nd, you should feel a point of slight resistance. Lighten up on your force for a fraction of a second before continuing into the 2nd gear slot.
Then come back and tell us how it went.
ps. How's your clutch fluid look?
