Default Check Engine Light came on???

MY 02 with 19000 miles driving casualy when downshifted to 5th at approx 52 mph when the "Check Engine Light" lit up. I'm the original owner with no evasive moves in the history of the car; good oil level. Does anyone have a theory? thanks in advance....NOTE: Search engine is not working...

It is impossible for us to tell you anything. You need to take the car to a place with an OBDII Scanner/Reader. Pull the CEL code and then let us know what the code is.

Did you check your gas cap?

Thanks Bobbyb! It was the gas cap....In my haste, I failed to turn the gas cap till it clicked last time I filled up (yesterday). It ended up unscrewing almost all the way...Thanks again....

midnitetalon,

Just so you know, it might not be your fault that the gas cap came loose. Just a couple of weeks ago, my check engine light also came on. Went to the dealer and they pulled a code of P1456 which is an evap leak. Dealer told me it was a loose gas cap. They tightened it and clear the codes and I was on my way. A week later, the engine light came on again. I am 100% positive that I tightened the cap at least 6 clicks before driving away from the gas station. I did some research on this board and found that many other owners (mostly MY02 owners) had a problem with a faulty gas cap. Went to the dealer and they replaced the gas cap under warranty. Hope this helps.

Yeah, any intel helps. I've had the same car and gas cap though for 19000 miles and never had a problem before. I always tighten the gas cap but had an incident take place the last time I pumped gas. Had a little run in with the cashier and sorta bolted before tightening all the way. If it turns out to be a faulty gas cap, I'll definitely repost and keep all advised. Thanks....
