Default Changing a rod bearing

My 2001 motor has 30k on it. A mechanic friend that works at the local Honda dealer said it is the rod bearing. He thought he could change the rod bearing by dropping the oil pan. Now he says the code he needs to know what color rod bearing it is, is located on the front of the crankshaft. He says he has to pull the motor to do it but he doesn't really want to do it. Now I am stuck taking it to another shop to do it.

Does anyone know of any other way do change the bearing or find the rod code without pulling the motor?

Thanks

You're taking a gamble by just changing the rod bearing without having machine work done. The crankshaft could be scored from the damaged bearing and will cause the new bearing to fail in a short period of time.

The proper way is to have the engine removed, have everything spec'd out, perform machine work if neccesary, and then replace the bearing with the properly sized one.

I can't tell you for sure since I've never had to look, but the codes are stamped on the No. 1 web. You might be able to see the stamps with a tiny mirror and light.

You definately can see the codes on the front of the crankshaft with the crank in the block and you can change the rod bearings after dropping the oil pan.

I've got 2 motors apart in the garage now, With some light and a mirror, you can see the rod bearing codes without pulling the crank. You will have to rotate the crank to get #1 on BDC.

The main bearing codes are stamped on the web. You need both series of codes to select bearings.

Weather or not the crank is damaged, you'll find out when you get the rod cap out. I'd be prepared to that a bearing isn't going to make things right.
