The Chain case is sealed to the front section of the cylinder head. If you don't remove the head you may be chasing an oil leak later. The chain case is also sealed to the oil pan. The Pan will need to be removed as well.

Why are you replacing the guides?

The tensioner can be replaced without disassembling much, it bolts to the head.

Well i made a post a while back about a 'funny noise under the hood', a noise that sound like a chain slapping and i guess i just figured thats where i needed to start. The car has 75k miles and a young guy owned it before me so you know thats its been rev'd out for a while. I adjusted the valves but it didn't seem to help. I did a search on this site and others and have come to find out "by word of mouth of course" that the 00' s2k had a recall on the tensioners. Don't know if it's true... but like i said, it's somewhere to start.

What do you think?

There was a recall on seat belt tensioners, not the timing chain tensioner.

I'd start looking for other causes of your noise 1st.

Well i've taken it to several different Specialty Hondas shops and they don't have any idea what it could be. They want me to leave it with them but i don't trust other people on my cars. I do the work myself, thats the only way to learn. I have no power lose at all so i know thats it's not coming from the drive train. I've made a post before explaining what it does but no one ever replied. I'll tell you and maybe you might have an idea of what it could be.

When i start it up cold, it's fine. I drive it normal but get on it every now and then and then park it. Wait five mins or so and start it back up and it sounds like the chain slapping. Waiting a few secs (10-15) the noise goes away. You can rev it up and the noise never returns, not even while your at idle. ONLY when you start it up after its been driven... and only SOMETIMES. Sometimes it doesn't do it. Ne suggestions? Thanks

Several people have had noisy chain tensioners, I'd persue that cause 1st.
