Default changing brake rotors

I warped a RF rotor at the track days on Fall Colors, so I might as well change both at the same time. I also need to change the rear rotors (thanks for the rotors Skip! Bummer about your S)

Do you have to remove the wheel bearings in order to remove either the front or rear rotors to change them?

I just ordered a Helms manual but it won't be here for several days. Any comments or threads w/ step by step directions would be appreciated. Thanks.

You don't have to remove either the front or rear wheel bearings.
  • Unbolt the brake hose bracket from the knuckle (front only).
  • Unbolt the caliper bracket from the knuckle. Raise and support the bracket/caliper assembly so the hose doesn't get kinked or twisted.
  • Remove the flat-headed screws holding the rotor to the hub. You can screw in 8x1.25 mm bolts to pull the rotor.
  • On reassembly, torque front caliper bracket bolts to 83 lb ft, hose bracket bolts to 7 lb ft, rear caliper bracket bolts to 41 lb ft.

It's not that difficult.

1) Remove wheels.
2) Remove those two little retaining screws on each rotor. (You MUST use an impact driver for this.)
3) Get the calipers out of the way. (Just a few bolts here and there, IIRC. Make sure the parking brake is off when doing the rears of course. Sorry I can't be more specific about this part, it's been a long time since I did this.)
4) The rotors slide right off.

The manual will explain all. Basic steps:

remove wheel

unbolt caliper

remove rotor

No need to worry about the wheel bearing.

You don't have to remove the wheel bearings.
After you jack up the car and have it secure on towers, take off the wheel.
You remove the caliper from the disc by removing two bolts found on the in side of the calipers. You don't have to remove the brake fluid line, just place the caliper somewhere where it's out of the way. There are a couple of screws on the center plate of the disc that qare the ones that fix the disc to the hub. Unscrew these and the disc should be free. You may want to spray some WD-40 or other lubricant to loosen up these screws, they may get a bit stubborn. You may also have to tap the disc bit to get it loose. The install of the new rotors is the reverse - rotor- screws-caliper- wheel. Really not a big deal.

My retaining screws came right off with a handheld screwdriver. YMMV.

If the rotors are stuck on, there are two threaded holes to use for leveraging them off. But mine came right off.

BTW, I did not replace those little retaining screws. They are not necessary. They do hold the rotor in place when the wheel is removed, which makes brake pad changes slightly easier.
