I just replaced my transmission fluid with Castrol Syntrans 75W-85. It's a fully synthetic GL4 substitute with the same viscosity as the Honda MTF (10W-30 equivalent). I spoke to Castrol's technical people beforehand to confirm that it is compatible with the Honda gearbox. Unsurprisingly, when I drained the old Honda fluid it smelled and looked just like a regular GL4 fluid.
The reason I did this was to reduce notchy shifting, especially when cold. It's early days yet, but the difference is very noticeable. I no longer feel like I need to baby the transmission and it's as smooth as butter. I have had the fluid replaced once before by Honda and it didn't make this kind of difference. Highly recommended.

And another thing, does anyone experience a clunk when the tranny is cold and you shift into 1st from a stop, I found that if you shift to second then slide it into 1st without releasing the clutch there is no clunk in fact it's buttery smooth.

I've had my transmission fluid changed to the new MTF06 within the previous week and this still seems to happen when it's cold. I can do the same thing with 5th and 6th, sitting in the car with the engine off.

Changing trans fluid almost always makes shifting easier.New fluid is better than used.Some seem to work better than others.
Find the brand that you prefer and change it every 10k miles or yearly for best results.
