My car has had difficult 1-2 shifts during the first few minutes of operation (I usually just skip 2nd gear until the box warms up) and I've had about 6-8 high rpm grinds in 6,800 miles. Shift quality is pretty good most of the time, but a little notchy. Fresh Honda MTL was put in at 5,000 mi.

I put in the Redline MTL last night. I only had time for a 10 minute test drive before bed, but so far, I'm impressed! My transmission shifted like it was warm right out of the driveway. Much smoother. I'll refrain from getting totally excited until I have had more time to evaluate it under a variety of conditions. The true test will come this weekend during three days of tracking at VIR when the tranny is hot.

Has anyone used a teflon additive like Nulon G70 in their gearbox?

More on my Redline MTL experiment. Cold transmission shifts are less notchy, and the warm shifts are buttery smooth. We'll see if this holds true in Fall/Winter. On track, the redline did not improve the occasional tendency to grind from 3-4. I still have to slow down the shift lever just a bit and make sure the clutch is completely disengaged and properly timed.

I tried RedLine at my annual transmission change. The incidents of slipping out of fourth gear are up dramatically, from rare to often. I don't know if it is the lube, the temp, or wear. I will change back to Honda MTF in the next few weeks and report back.

Sounds like you need to see your Honda dealer. My car never does that. I guess the different lube could make such a problem worse because of different lubricity and (slightly) lower viscosity. From the data on the Redline website their MTF has really good friction characteristics for synchro operation though. How was your shift quality?

No change, it shifted well before the redline and after.

I do not want to have the dealer pull the transmission again until I give Honda a little time to introduce a better 1-2 repair. Then we can talk about fourth at the same time.

Chris,

Do you really think that Honda is going to come out with a better 1-2 repair?? The only option they have right now is to replace the synchros due to intolerances. Personally, I don't think this is the real problem of why some of us grind. I hope you're right about this.
