worn out before the detergents do their job? Thats interesting. I'm almost positive that most members on this board change their oil at 3K intervals... never heard of any complaints.
May i ask what you base your statement on?

I recommend you read the Oil Journals in the FAQ and Road Rage's posts in particular - its a good read on what oils seem better, how long they really last, and why there's no need to change oil so much.

You should really read the owner's manual. 7,500 for normal service is recommended, so by changing your oil at less than 50% recommended, you might be doing more harm than good, as oil has a lifecycle of its own and needs to be worn out properly and not replaced before its detergents do their job.
do you have a link to this article you speak of?

If you go to the Oil Journals thread at the top of this forum section - its a sticky - you'll see a hugs list of linked threads with discussions on all the oils in the S. Go to the engine oil section and, frankly, just start reading, paying attention to RR's posts. They are very informative, and one way or another, at least you'll be making an informed decision about when and why to change your oil.
There's a ton of great info there from everything to what brands are better, what you can get away with, etc.

Mechanically, its not doing a lot of harm unless you look at these additive buildups and how they can contribute to engine wear. Environmentally and fiscally, you're using more oil than you need to and are spending more money than you need to. Road Rage has posted to this end many times and I'd point you to his posts.
