They say oil is good for 3 months or 3,000 miles and synthetic 7 months or 7,000 but then again who are "they?" The detergents in the oil tend to break down after such a period of time, thru heat cycles and such and mixture with oxygen. but as for the op's question, change the oil leave the filter, the filter is there to catch contaminates which the engine shouldn't have produced any since it hasn't been driven!

Just do it so you can feel better. I bet you won't feel right driving with old oil in the car

Worth changing the filter too? Or should I just dump the oil and put in fresh stuff?
I'd change the filter. Doesn't make sense to me to worry about the oil yet ignore the oil that remains in the filter itself. Filters don't cost that much and they're easy to swap out. YMMV.

I change the oil in a new car, but then again, it sits there for month. Then again, you buy it off the shelf, it has sat there...for who knows...

No worries, but change the filter like they have said above.

They are wrong BTW.

You are very correct in mentioning about heat cylces and the like, but since the oil has just sat there in a pretty sealed sump, it'll be absolutely fine!

Really is no need for you to change unless you have money to waste.

Just keep an eye on the oil level (as always).

If you start to consume lots, the oil has sheared and it's time to change.

I use Castrol Edge (I believe it is badged as Syntec for you guys) and it has offered the best results for me compared with Silkolene Pro-S and Castrol Semi-Synth.

However, there comes a point after about 4000 miles where it starts chewing through oil all of a sudden.

It's at that point I know to change

Oil never wears out but it does become contaminated, diluted and the add pkg loses it's positive properties because of these factors plus through volitility. It would seem that a relatively easy test could be produced for consumers, but it would probably have to be done through a major oil company and this type of info is not conducive to selling oil to consumers who (in many cases) do not need to change oil every three mo. or three thousand miles. If oil did require this frequency and low milage, would'nt the oil companies be quick to produce a product to prove that oil should be changed at this frequency?
Keep the public in the dark and guessing, and they sell more oil. Its just good business.
