CEL 1456

CEL 1456
I pulled code 1456 today. I have tried retightening the gas cap several times and the code has not reset. The car is a 2002 and has a K&N filter and DI plugs, but no other mods. I did fill up at a Crown station the other day, and had always previously used Exxon gas. I still used 93 octane, but could a bad tank of gas cause this light?
I also read that there was a TSB for the fuel neck for the '02 cars. Does anyone have any more info on this? Is there any way to tell if the neck is the problem, without taking it to the dealer?
Is there any other problem that may be triggering the light? What else should I be looking for? Is there any reason I cannot keep driving with this light on?
Thanks

The deformed filler pipe is the 1st thing to check. The cap should easily spin on the filler 2-3 revolutions before it starts to "click"
Any other vapor leak from the filler pipe to the fuel tank, can cause the DTC.
You really need a technician that understands the EVAP system, and has a scan tool than can access the EVAP functions to diagnose the problem.

at first, the cap wouldn't go on smoothly and not tighten up well. it would ratchet too early. i thought the cap was bad, so i put on a new one and it's the same thing.
How hard is it to change the filler neck?
i did a search and someone mentioned TBB 04-002. i can't find that in the library.

Would an aftermarket gas cap affect the sensor and cause the CEL? I want to try a new gas cap before I take the car in to a dealer, but am not thrilled about spending $26 to get a new one from the dealer.
Also, anyone know about replacing the fuel filler neck (how difficult, covered under CPO, replaced for free because of the TSB)?

Most aftermarket gas caps don't seal properly on honda filler pipes. I can't tell you how many P1456's I've fixed by replacing Stant fuel caps.
The threads inside the filler pipe are deformed and don't let the cap thread all the way down before ratcheting tight.
Replacing the filler pipe isn't to hard, you must pull the trunk lining remove the pipes from the rubber boots that attach to the tank.
The TSB is 04-002, which applies to some CRV's, Insight's and 02-03 S2000's. There is a VIN break for 03 models, but all 02's apply.
The S2000 filler pipe part # is 17660-S2A-A31
Weather or not the fuel filler pipe is covered under an extended warranty is up to the warranty company.

My CEL lit up recently because of a loose gas cap. It didn't go off after tightening the gas cap. My local Honda service manager said it can take several days for the light to go off after lighting for that cause. She was right. It stayed on for at least a day after that but it did go off.

Does anyone know the price of the filler pipe part?

The filler pipe roughly runs $92- luckily mine was covered under warranty. its a pretty easy install. my fuel filler cap was seizing up on the pipe. never thre a code on me, i guess i caught it early.
