These same pics?

I have literally popped out a dozen CDV rings with these tools in matter of seconds.

Snap ring pliers are the correct tool. You want the kind the close when you squeeze the handle. I use a pick like RIO most of the time though.

I had a similar set of pics with no luck...

This isn't a normal snap ring where one could use the snap pliers, it's more of a wire ring that engages the retaining groove and keeps the pressure cap down.

Anyways did the install of the AP1 slave last night. Noticable difference but the heavy flyweel isn't helping things.

Yep the same, just different handles. It was the biggest pita ever. Glad you find it much easier to do haha.

I don't use picks anymore. Done 10+ cars now.

The new method is to drill the smallest hole possible on the side facing the transmission, just under the rubber cap ridge and then push out the snap ring from the outside with a pick or paper clip. Takes a few seconds.

You want to make the hole perpendicular to the cylinder and straight towards the snap ring. Spin the ring with a pick so the opening is facing where you are drilling so you don't damage it and make sure to go slow and stop right when you break through the wall to not damage the middle peg.

Something like this:

That is how I ended up doing mine too. Works so much easier than fighting with the pics, which I wasn't able to do either. Took all of about 2 minutes with a drill and tiny drill bit to remove the clip. Careful not to drill further than just to access the valley where the clip lives. Push the clip through the hole you have drilled with a pick to where you can get a hold of it and off she comes. I have since installed an '03 slave cylinder because I wore out my original and didn't feel like doing the mod again on a new cylinder.
