Caution to SCers
Hey all, just a word of caution to those that have a supercharged S2000.
Recently my car was acting up. The RPM would fluctuate at a constant throttle setting, and the car would predictably surge with it. This happened in all gears in the pre VTEC range. Then to top it off, when I brought the throttle to idle (I enjoy talking like its a jet by the way) the RPM would drop so low that the engine would stall. Knowing very little about my own engine (I know, cardinal sin) I thought it might be a spark plug issue, but the problem persisted after I had them replaced. I was finally shoved in the right direction and ended up at Haskell Performance Shop in Phoenix. One of the Techs there owns a SC'd S2000 also, so right away I'm feeling better. Anyway, they pop the hood and almost immediately notice the problem. My blow off valve hose is blocked. Ok so there's no way to admit ignorance without sounding like a retard, but when I bought the car (used) it already had the SC on it and it was installed like that. Apparently this is not the ideal configuration...duh. The way it's set up it doesn't allow the charger to cool and it just reboosts that blocked up air. To further prove their point the techs there then offered to show me the remaining parts to an engine that recently blew up with the exact same configuration. Now I know what you all must be asking yourselves, 'well why hasn't Bino's car blown up, and why only now after almost 2 years has the car just started to show symptoms of disaster?' What a great question! It's because the ridiculously insane heat in Phoenix (just moved here) accelerated the overheating of the air and allowed the problem to present itself. And, luckily, I haven't been asking too much out of my engine while I've had it. They say if I'd driven a little harder, I'd be looking for either a new motor, or a new ride.
So the lesson is, don't block up your blow off hose with a model paint bottle and think everything is going to be OK!
-Bino
PS If you were offended by the complete lack of technical language in the previous E-mail or anything else for that matter, feel free to fill out a comment sheet and drop it off in your local 'Get a life' box! Have a great day!
