All you need is liquid wrench or something like it. It will make getting them off SOOOO much easier!

As you say, LW and a bit of patience is all you need. Like wheel studs, those studs in the back of the cat are "pressed" in. I'd rather use them over again. When done the right way, the "slash and burn" technique of getting rid of them is not needed.
