Definitely the catalyst material inside breaking apart. I had an aftermarket cat on a previous car that split into pieces and sounded just like that. Time for a test pipe.

Tengoku- thanks for posting the video which helped obtain strong possible tips from many of you.
This little clanging rattle started on me last week. I thought it was my exhaust rubber hangers, so I adjusted them while I had my car on the jackstands doing my oil/tranny/diff fluid changes this weekend but the sound is still there strong as ever- under idle and at a faster pace around 3k-4k ish.
Now I will definitely have to check the CAT because this very well could have been the issue I've had with a certain 'speed' issue over a year ago- which I thought had cleared up on it's own, but may be back...

The first video you can hear the rattle underneath the car when the engine is idling.

I went underneath the car and hit the cat with a rubber mallet trying to see if it is the same noise, Is this the same noise?

do I need a new cat?
Thanks in advance!

The only difference between MY'00 converters and the later ones (>MY'04) is the position of the sec O2 sensor.
All of my OEM converters (and I have 3) have failed at some point.
They destroyed 2 secO2 sensors too.

...and although o2 sensor location is different, the wiring is long enough to reach. So using any year cat is a simple bolt on operation.

thanks guys,...im trying to make sure that it is the cat rattling before i buy anything.
When I knock on the cat i can hear movement inside, that is pretty much a dead giveaway correct?? Nothing should move in it if its 100% perfect right? I couldnt find any heat shields loose anywhere on the car and can only get the rattle once in a while.

Would you recommend just going with a Berk Hi Flow or Asura cat now Splitfire?.....I wouldnt mind finding a low mileage oem cat(my friend put his back on some im out of luck there) but I feel you dont know the history of them even if "low mileage". With all these super slammed hella flush ride as low as you can people, I feel the cats have been smashed on speed bumps already and its only a matter of time before I do it again like you.
