seems very common with xxxx car. particularly when a mechanical overrev happens...

I keep reading about this happening. Mine was on the #1 cylnder though, it seems most people were #4. It seems like everyone keeps getting new motors, im hoping that isnt my cheapest solution.

You said you were driving hard, did you miss shift at all? How many miles are on your car and have you had your valve clearences checked? I think valve problems are pretty rare on the S unless it is abused either through poor driving or poor maint., although that is not always the case.

I have misshifted before, but not when it when it happeend. I guess i must have done damage before and weakened the valves or retainers. Who knwos.. Not really important now. Just waiting on the shop for word.

You broke a few retainers back in the day.

They finally let go.

if you mis-shifted and caused an overrev, the car can run fine for months with nary the sign of any problem. and suddenly, the retainer you cracked 6 months ago finally gives, and the valve drops.
