Yup that was why they could not find out it was the O2's.

Well, the car is back with problems now. The O2 sensors did not fix it. The car is running rich again with the same code P0172 (bank 1).

Should I replace the fuel pressure regulator? This is the last thing that I think I can do now.

The mechanics told me to try replacing the TDC sensor (the one on the upper left corner of the engine valve cover), but I doubt that would solve the problem as I have not seen others having trouble with that part.

So do I: bad exhaust smell, some carbon deposit on the rear bumper, and horrible gas mileage.

I am dealing with a similar issue (running 8 parts air, 1 part fuel). My Honda dealership recommended a valve adjustment. Have you tried that?

when you get the code read, check the freeze frame data to see what the sensors are measuring at the time the CEL turned on. this data can be a lot more useful than just the CEL code.

also, might be interesting to see what your short term and long term fuel trim is...

as for the TDC sensors on the valve cover, i kinda doubt they could be bad. i don't think the ecu will allow the engine to run if they aren't working. you can test the TDC sensors. removed them from the valve cover, then put an ohm meter on the terminals. when you put the sensor near a piece of steel, the resistance changes.

8:1 fuel? Wow. That's rich beyond any reasonable 'out of spec' range. You prolly have an open injector. Looks like you're just dumping fuel in! Or you're not getting enough air, like clogged intake. Take out the filter, and drive around without it, after you've reset the ECU. Don't go where dust is, though. Don't want that in your engine.

Sounds like a vacuum leak. Look for a loose vac hose. Do the carb cleaner trick (spray it around potential leaks while the car idles, listen for change)
What other mods did the previous owner perform?
