If you make sure you allow for all the oil to drain out, change your oil filter and put in the drain plug, a dipstick reading on H or near it with only 4qts of oil tells me that there is something wrong with the dipstick or the way it is set up.

I'd put 5.1qts and make a note of how it reads on the dipstick 15 minutes after initially warming up the car. I would then make sure it reads this way (15 min after turning off the engine) on subsequent level checks.
