Default Car Starts and then dies...

SInce it has been cold out I have noticed that my car makes that noise others have reported, but I've decided it is the starter staying engaged too long...but anyhow, a few times when it has been really cold my car has started rpms vary a little bit and then it dies (after no more than 10 seconds). It restarts fine and there are no more problems.

What is this? Is my battery getting tired? I bought my car used (its a 2001) with about 50k on it and I dont know if its a new battery or not as I dont have the service records.

Any thoughts?

thanks.

Yeah, I think is the battery too. Your battery is like 6 year old now. My car didn't start up this week too. Had to jump start it and drove for an hour. After got home, i turn off the car and try to start it up again. It didn't start. So i went out and got a new battery and it start right up.

this is widely reported and normal...start it...when it dies wait a few secs then start again..and drive off after letting it warm for atleast a full minute or when the idle settles down( i recommend longer)...very annoying problem with this car as i've never seen another car do it unless its -50F or something...but NORMAL don't worry.. synthetic oil helps i've noticed

A new battery will do nothing. Like mentioned above...its the car's ECU adapting to the new colder temps...It usually does it one time and it won't do it again until the temps change drastically again. But if you want to buy a new battery, go ahead and see if it solves your problem.

It has done it a few times, but we've had some crazy temp swings out here. The battery could very well be the original, so maybe it's time for a new battery anyway.

I experience the noise at least 2-3 times a week currently (temp. around 5 deg. in the A.M.)...... I just bought my car certified pre-owned w/ a brand new battery. I would not recommend a new battery, but if you're unsure have it checked out at autozone for free.

It wouldn't surprise me to be the battery. It happened to my 05 Accord yesterday. Only 40K on the car, cause it's for work, but charged it, started, remove the positive terminal, so we know the alternator is fine. Went to Pep Boys and bought a new battery, no problem now.
