Default Car Sounds Like a Subaru

I realize there's an exact topic like this. But the last topic had CURRENT CEL codes whereas mine has none.

I did get a random misfire about a month about but it went away and engine sounded normal.

But now that my car sounds like a subaru I'm getting extremely worried.

Ignition coil test is the first thing to do correct?

Thanks for your help

subaru sound = running on 3 cylinders.. I'd try to diagnose which cylinder isn't firing and why first..

Okay so start it up and unplug from each ignition coil?

Do I need to unscrew the 10mm first and pull it off or what?

you can just disconnect the coil wire on the top one by one and listen to any change in revs. I believe you need to unscrew first before you can remove the connector.

I revved a tiny bit on each one and when cylinder #4 was disconnected it almost died when the rev came down

But either way it always sounded about the same in idle

also the clip from the wiring harness to the ignition coil is missing on cylinder #1
it just slides on and off

you don't rev it yourself.. if a cylinder isn't firing, unplugging the plug will make no change in the revs. Only the cylinder/s that were working will make change in engine rev.

so what is the proper way to do this then
leave the car running and pull the ignition coil out and unplug 1 by 1?

because i heard no change.

If you remove the coil then there is no reason to unclip it. Start the motor with all four coils in and connected then proceed to pull them out one at a time(replacing them onto the plugs after removing) and see if there is any change in idle. If the idle fluctuates after removing a coil, that means the cylinder is firing. If you remove a coil and nothing happens, you have a bad cylinder.

Yes, unplug/pull the coils out one by one.

take all 10mm out... start car... pull coil #1 see if there any change... if yes that's not your problem.. put it back on.. take #2 out... same as 1 if any change that's not it... put it back on.. keep doing it till #4

when you take out 1 of those coils and your car keep iddling the same ( as a subaru) that one is your problem
