Yes the car will run without the battery.

However, any disturbance in the terminals while running is the best way to spike the rectifier and cause a flickering dash.

I was getting quite a bit of dashboard flickering. I initially thought that my new daytime running lights were the issue as I had just installed them.

Once I got the battery cables tightened down and installed properly the flickering disappeared and is okay so far.
