How on earth did the car run? Terminals must have been touching the posts, because the positive supplies power to the fuse box.

I have no idea, but it must be possible. The cables were several inches away from the battery terminals so they weren't even close to touching, as I have a small aftermarket battery.

the fuse box cable is still attached to the positive terminal regardless if its connected to the battery, so it would still receive power supply from the alternator

you got lucky the positive didn't hit the fame and short out but it didn't so it's all good. the battery is only needed to start the car. all cars will stay running with out the batter wouldn't damage a thing. I some times swap out batteries with the car running so you don't lose any presets or learned memory.(not recommended)

Yeah I think there was enough distance to keep it from hitting the frame or any other part. I've been swapping the battery in and out so frequently lately as the start of driving season is approaching, I forgot to the tighten down the cable bolts. Thanks for confirming that.

Probably not an issue with your battery, and I'm sure you know better, but I've seen some cases crack at the posts from overtightening the terminals. I think the posts are made of lead.
