Had a very similar problem on my stock '00 (without the smoke) but it was intermittent and took 4 visits to 2 different dealers to fix.. on mine it was the fuel pump internals which had partially failed, problem with lagging etc. started just at higher RPM's and moved steadily down the power band until the car became undrivable, had to wait until it got bad and stayed bad for the techs to find.. hope this helps, Mike

ok put in the new spark plugs. ngk copper racing plugs 7173 gapped at .032. problem still persisted took it to the dyno to measure the air to fuel ratio. guy suspected the fuel pressure regulator from comptech was messed up like stuck, pushing too much fuel when it didnt need it. anyways we took it apart blew it out and car started running better right away. but after a while it started doing what is did a couple months ago with the MAP Sensor problem. car idles a little funny but drives fine till you get to VTEC and car bogs down. Then the Check engine light turns on. the code was for a the Barometric sensor. The techs think the sensor thinks i am running at low altitude (I live about 5200ft above sea level) so it thinks i needs to be running more fuel. dealership had its highest trained tech working on it. said to drive it for a couple days to see if it clears up and if not they are gonna have it for a whole day to find the problem.
