car magically won't start

Try not to post repeatedly if they are not that far apart in time, I think it's a violation of some sort on most forums.
i.e. just edit the first post.
Have you tried starting the car with the stock ECU to rule out the AEM being the problem?

i've connected with both of the cables i tried on the same laptop and both failed in this instance. hypothetically, if the mechanical timing was off, would there be spark?

ok, so i should prob try to procure a coilpack to test with. just tested the harness plugs for the coilpacks and they're all getting 12 volts. that rules out a problem with the ecu, yes?

It seems unlikely to me that you'd have all 4 coilpacks go bad at once.
Also, generally ignition coils (assuming here that the individual ones work the same) are "fired" when the voltage to them is cut off. So I don't think 12v at the coils rules out an ecu issue, but maybe makes it less likely.
Did you do what SouthDakotaS2K said to check for spark? Make sure the plug is touching something grounded.
Sounds to me more like the ecu isn't getting a engine rotation/position signal.
Wild guesses but maybe it will lead you somewhere. Good luck.
(PS. This topic title made me laugh. There's not much magical about a car that WON'T start. That means the magic isn't working! )
