lol used to happen to me too. since the car is not daily driven anymore. i usually just park it in the garage and not put up the hand brake. keeps your ebrake nice and taught.

If my garage is almost level (< 1 degree slope maybe? car generally won't move in neutral but sometimes with warm tires it will very slowly roll) is it better for me to just put it in gear and not even use the hand brake here? Is there more strain/wear on the gearbox this way? Generally if I'm out and park somewhere I'll engage the hand brake first and then put it in gear.

Just leave it in 1st gear, without brake. This has no negative effects on anything, other then the front end of your car if your on a large enough slope for the car to move the engine under compression. I generally never use the hand brake unless im on a slope to where I feel the compression of the motor in first gear wont hold the car. This is good practice after a spirited drive as well, when brakes are hot, you can warp rear rotors this way by having the rotor cool down quicker then the portion that is clamped under the caliper/pad.

+1 to what he said. the compression should be enough to hold the car. i just use two wheels chocks. you can even use bricks =)
