Well...it's going to be debateable. This exhaust retaier was very hard to see. But it was one of those that I had to pull.

From what I've gathered, this retainer could have likely gone another 25k with no harm.

Perhaps just a bad metal issue. This one could have just started to crack due to normal use. Something we were all hoping could not happen.

I'm starting to think this can happen to any s2k.

Yet mine has 75k hard miles and mine are fine.

I will be able to gauge some mileage this weekend. Car # EIGHT may be on for Saturday, and I looked at it over a year ago. I'll find out the mileage, and post how much has changed in that questionable retainer.

so you're saying the ap1 intake retainers are susceptile to cracking due to "normal" driving and no overrevving...

and so we should change the intake retainers to ap2 retainers?

No AP2's so far tho...

not a single one?

The AP2 retainers must be very very tough.

Hi Bill. As usual I have to throw in my two cents worth.

Even if we do see the odd cracked retainer in the absence of a money shift, we know of cars that have been driven hard for many miles without problems. Two examples would of course be you, and Modifry. Even though the jury is still out on this in some respects, certainly we have seen enough to say that it is not a problem that most S2000 owners need to worry about. (LOL, take that as a question rather than a statement of fact.) Do you agree?

Bill, how often do you inspect the retainers on your customers cars? As you know, I'm checking mine every time we change the oil (and I have faith that I won't see a cracked retainer on the exhaust side without also seeing some cracks I can detect in a normal inspection over on the intake side). Do you routinely inspect customers cars for this?

I'm trying to decide whether or not we should be checking our customers cars every time they bring them in.
